YORK HISTORIC ENGLISH
CITY
The choice of places to visit and things to do in
York is simply overwhelming. Explore the past and enjoy the present -
it's all here within the medieval city walls. There are dungeons and castles,
grand halls and houses, quaint shops and ancient pubs. Take a trip on a
river cruiser, by horse and carriage, by open top bus, or just walk
around the city.
MUSEUMS: There are numerous museums in York. Among
them the Castle Museum displays 300 years of social history, the
National Railway Museum is the largest of its kind in the world and JORVIK, - the Viking City, is a real experience of living in the Viking
age 1000 years ago. YORK MINSTER: Commenced in 1220 and completed over 200 years later, it
is the largest medieval Gothic church in Northern Europe and the most
spectacular building in York, dominating the skyscape with its three
towers. The Minster was built over the ruins of the Roman city and fort
and these 2000 year old remains can be seen by exploring the specially
built underground museum below the Minster.
